news flash updated requirement for carbon monoxide alarms

carbon monoxide detector As of this year the State of Montana and City of Missoula adopted the 2012 International Residential Codes. With the updated codes came the requirement of all single-family residences, duplexes, and rental units containing a gas appliance (furnace, water heater, fireplace, etc.) must by law have a carbon monoxide (CO) detector. These alarms are required in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms at a minimum.

The code reads:

Code R315.3– Where required in existing dwellings:

Where work requiring a permit occurs in existing dwellings that have attached garages or in existing dwellings within which fuel-fired appliances exist, carbon monoxide alarms shall be provided.

This new rule applies when any residential permit (roofing, water heater or furnace replacement, remodel, plumbing, etc.) is obtained from the Missoula City Development Services.

What does this mean for you?

For your health and safety and according to the law, ensure you have a working CO detector in your home or rental. Installation of one will be required before a city inspector will sign off and finalize any permits opened for the residence.
